Gather Ripe Seeds:
Collect seeds from ripe staghorn sumac fruits. Wait until the sumacs naturally release their seeds, indicating full maturity.
The seeds are covered in bright red “hairs” that aren’t actually hairs but tiny fibers coated in a sticky resin-like substance.

Staghorn Sumac Seeds (Rhus typhina)

The staghorn sumac (Rhus typhina) is a fascinating native tree found in the eastern half of North America. Here’s what you need to know about growing and caring for it:

Berries: Sumac berries are high in malic acid and vitamin C. They’re tart and tangy, similar to sour lemon. Use them as a wild substitute for lemon in culinary recipes. They’re great in hummus, salads, pasta, and meat marinades. Cold-infused sumac water creates a beverage similar to pink lemonade.

Medicinal Uses (historically):
Native American tribes used staghorn sumac for various purposes:
Treating diarrhea, fevers, and uterine prolapse.
Enhancing milk flow for nursing mothers.
Using roots as astringents, blood purifiers, diuretics, and emetics.

You are receiving 12 seeds when you place an order.
We wait until the paw paw naturally fall from the tree, indicating full maturity and then we harvest ripe Paw Paw seeds. When you receive the fresh ripe seeds, please do the following steps.
Sterilize the Seeds:
Rinse the seeds in water and soak them in a 10% bleach/water solution for a minute.
Rinse them again under tap water to sterilize and kill any fungus.
Cold Stratification:
Place the seeds in a Ziploc bag with moist sphagnum moss.
Seal the bag and keep it in the refrigerator for 70 to 100 days.
This cold stratification process prepares the seeds for germination.
Germination:
After stratification, soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours to break dormancy.
Plant the seeds 1 inch deep in well-draining soil or deep containers.
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Pawpaw seedlings will sprout in about a month or two, but growth will be slow initially.
Remember, growing paw paw from seed requires patience, but it’s worth it! Pawpaw trees are hardy in USDA zones 5 through 8 and prefer slightly acidic soil. 🌱🌳

The variety of Elderberry is either York or Adams 2. With good care, the mature plant develops a huge umbral of flowers which will turn into large elderberries.

Elderberry cuttings refer to sections of elderberry branches that are taken from a mature elderberry plant for the purpose of propagating new plants. Propagating elderberries from cuttings is a common and effective method to replicate the characteristics of a healthy and productive elderberry plant.  

Characteristics of Elderberry Cuttings:
    Size and Length:
        Elderberry cuttings are typically sections of branches that are 6 to 12 inches long. The cuttings should have at least 2-3 nodes (swollen areas on the stem where leaves, branches, or roots grow).

    Appearance:
        The cuttings are healthy, with no signs of disease, pests, or damage.

    Nodes:
        Nodes are important for the development of roots and shoots. Each cutting will have at least one node below the soil for root development and one or more nodes above the soil for the growth of new shoots.

   Process of Taking Elderberry Cuttings:

    Selecting Cuttings:
        We choose healthy branches from a mature, disease-free elderberry plant that are one year old for optimal results.

    Rooting Hormone (Optional):
        Some gardeners choose to dip the cut end of the elderberry cutting into a rooting hormone to encourage root development. This step is optional but can enhance the success of rooting.

    Planting:
        Plant the elderberry cuttings in a well-draining potting mix or directly in the ground, ensuring that at least one node is buried below the soil surface.

    Watering:
        Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged, during the rooting process.

    Rooting Time:
        Elderberry cuttings typically root within a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on environmental conditions.

Once the cuttings have developed roots and new shoots, they can be transplanted to their permanent location in the garden.

Mullein is a good beginner forager plant. Common mullein is a widespread, easy-to-identify plant in all seasons, and is commonly found on disturbed soils. It has a tall stalk that grows up straight, up to seven feet tall surrounded at the base by a rosette of velvety gray-green leaves.
