Epazote, Dysphania ambrosioides, is used as an herb in cooking or tea and, in the mint family, with a distinctly pungent flavor. Raw, the resinous scent has notes of turpentine or creosote, which mellows when heated. It is traditionally used with black beans for flavor and its antiflatulent properties. It is also used to flavor other traditional Mexican dishes like quesadillas and sopes (especially those containing huitlacoche), soups, mole de olla, eggs and potatoes.  

Epazote can help with constipation, menstrual cramps and treat intestinal hookworms, nematodes, and the tropical parasite Trypanosoma cruzi.  

Epazote contains vitamins A and C, which have antioxidant properties that can help fight free radicals and protect cells from damage. Vitamin C also helps the body produce more white blood cells, which can strengthen the immune system. Some studies suggest that regularly taking epazote can lower the risk of getting common diseases like colds, fevers, coughs, and the flu.

Fresh Lion’s Mane Mushroom, veganically grown on Pin Oak stump in edible landscape, meaning it’s as close to wild as you can get.  Rain and sunshine produced these, not a climate-controlled lab environment, which means greater nutrient and mineral density.  Plus these are nice and large which means more flexibility of use!

Selling one large mushroom harvest of 6lbs  As this is grown outside there may be some minor debris, lead matter etc, but overall very clean.

Fruits

Calicarpa americana. Given their diminutive size, their flavor is not super impactful but are delicious when baked into bread or pastries, infusing the confection with a subtle flavor and beautiful color.  It can also be made into a jelly, sauce or cocktail.  

They hold up well in plated and are also stunning baked goods, lending the bright purple color to dough or creams.

Some say the taste is like an elderberry, but with a unique “grape-like” flavor all its own. It is said to have antibacterial properties, and a recent study showed that a compound in the leaves can help fight MRSA or Staph infections. Most of the medicinal documentation relates to the roots and leaves, but it’s likely that the berries have not been analyzed to the same extent.

Family Name (Scientific and Common): Magnoliaceae  (Magnolia).

Early inhabitants use the tincture extracted from bark for chronic rheumatism and as a medicine for colds, coughs and fevers.
the leaves can be boiled to make a tea that is a diaphoretic, a laxative, a stimulant, and a tonic.

Sweet Bay Magnolia Leaves, Fresh

Chokeberry, (Aronia melanocarpa), native to North America. It is aptly named for the astringent acidic taste, which may be made into jelly and preserves. The plant has a long history of use among indigenous peoples; it is an important source of food and medicine and has a number of ceremonial uses. The pits and foliage are not edible and may contain hydrocyanic acid in varying amounts.

Chokeberries have higher antioxidant levels than other berries, and contain beneficial nutrients, such as quercetin, quinic, minerals, and vitamins, while being low in sugar.

Chokeberries contain the highest levels of anthocyanins (the pigment in the berry that gives them their dark purplish-black color) and proanthocyanidins (plant-based super-antioxidants) like other well-known “superfruits." These properties protect cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. As well as, reduce inflammation improve circulation by strengthening capillary walls, inhibit enzymes that break down collagen, and reduce allergy production. They might improve the function of the circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems, prevent gastric damage, and the liver from chemical damage.

Sustainably harvested young pods, gathered over large area of fields.  

Milkweed (Asclepias spp.) is essential to the lifecycle of Monarch butterflies, whose habitat is threatened and land development encroaches on the abundance of this native plant.  Grassroots movements to plant milkweed, which is part of the MfM edible landscape, is one was we can help to support the ecosystem.  Gathering pods, is something that is highly seasonal and dependent on availability is also something I am particularly mindful to utilize, so as to keep the impact in balance.

They are best eaten young.  They are delicious dredged and fried whole, the interior silks have the texture of an unctuous vegan cheese.  Please note there it is very difficult to know at what stage the interior will be prior to preparation, they may no lend themselves to eating whole, only the interior, or not at all, so please plan accordingly.  Unfortunately I cannot guarantee their edibility, but I do my best to choose young good looking pods in the foray.

Warning: some people have adverse reaction to the raw sap in millkweed, please consume and prepare with caution.

White Jelly Roll Fungus, Ductifera pululahuana (also known as Exidia alba)

Studies on the nutritional and health benefits of this particular fungus are rare, however mushrooms of the same family are know to have many health benefits including reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Similar species contain generous amounts of proteins and nutrients including pectin, calcium, vitamin D, B1, and B2.

Please note, this species is sometimes is said to be inedible, but that probably only refers to the fact that this particular species is not commonly eaten.  I personally have consumed plenty of this mushroom.  Cooked in stews, dried and powdered.

It is always recommended to consult a physician and proceed with caution.

Epazote (Dysphania ambrosioides, formerly Chenopodium ambrosioides) is said to boost the immune system, improve digestive health, helps with gas and indigestion as well as weight loss.

Epazote has a long history of both culinary and medicinal use. Native to the Americas it is found wildly throughout the southwestern United States. Common names include paico macho, hierba homigero, and yerba de Santa Maria.

It contains a compound called ascaridole with Mayans use as an infusion/tea to treat parasite infections, though it can be toxic to the liver when taken in large amounts. Its pungent flavor is often added to beans to help minimize flatulence Oil of Chenopdium is derived from this plant.

Goji, Lycium barbarum, is a superfood, most commonly grown in China or the Himalayas.  Keep your footprint smaller and the nutrients more dense.  These are hand-harvested from the Mad for Mushrooms veganic edible landscape in Louisville KY.  This Goji plant is in its 3rd season and has been prolifically growing.  

The goji berry is native to Asia, where this brightly colored fruit has been cherished as a medicinal herb and food supplement for over 2,000 years. Goji, or wolf berries, are widely available for purchase in health food stores and online, however the circumstances of their propagation and harvesting has come under greater scrutiny.  You can rest assured of the freshness and purity of these fruits.  Although fresh and dry goji berries do not usually cause any side effects or adverse reactions in healthy people, please consult your physician with any concerns.

St John's Wort - Fresh, Flowers and leaves

A. filipendulina or ‘Gold Plate’ yarrow, is a fern-leaf cultivar. It boasts upright stems of four to five feet tall, and compactly clustered flower heads six inches across in mustard-yellow hues.&nbsp;Its silvery green leaves arise from the base of this clumping variety.Yarrow has a good reputation for medicinal use as an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic and is widely used in herbal medicine. This perennial wild edible tastes bitter but after all, bitter is generally better for your health. Yarrow contains many vitamins and minerals, and is used in the treatment of a wide range of disorders. Yarrow is particularly valuable for stopping the flow of blood, treating colds, fevers, treating wounds, kidney diseases, and menstrual pain.Although the leaves are bitter, they can be eaten raw or cooked; young leaves mixed in with a salad are recommended. Ideal for pickling, this is for fresh leaves, grown in my organic (uncertified) and veganic garden. Thompson grapeleaves are the best for eating, as rolled (domades) or for pickling, keeping pickles crunchy with inhibitors to the natural enzyme that makes pickles soft. Grape Leaves - Fresh*  Ideal for pickling.

Nanking cherries grow on a medium-sized shrub that reaches no more than 2 and a half meters tall. The small red fruits, or drupes, grow in clusters on short stems. The clusters of fruit are nestled in among the leaves, spaced out at intervals along the branches. Nanking cherries are quite small, measuring one to 2 centimeters in diameter (about the size of a blueberry). Their pale pink to bright cherry red skin is shiny and smooth, and the pulp is juicy. Each fruit contains one seed, much like other cherries. Nanking cherries are sweet and tart. They contain large pits and so are most commonly used for jams or preserves. Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) is a perennial herb. The parts of the tarragon plant that grow above the ground are used to make medicine. In foods and beverages, tarragon is used as a culinary herb.Tarragon is used for indigestion (dyspepsia), poor appetite, nausea and vomiting after surgery, toothache, sleep problems, and other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses. Tarragon is a good source of potassium. Lance-leaved tickseed ( Coreopsis lanceolata) of the family Asteraceae, is native to North America in the the southern Appalachian states and may be found in wider distribution from Canada to Mexico. Features solitary, yellow, daisy-like flowers (1-2" diameter) with eight yellow rays (toothed at the tips) and flat yellow center disks. Narrow, hairy, lance-shaped leaves. Unknown medicinal uses but entire plant is edible. Evening primrose (Oenothera biennis) is an herbaceous biennial plant native to North and South America that also grows throughout Europe and parts of Asia. It has yellow flowers that open at sunset and close during the day. The oil from evening primrose seeds contains omega-6 fatty acids, including gamma-linolenic acid.  Native Americans made poultices from the evening primrose plant for bruises and wounds and used its stem and leaf juices as topical remedies for skin inflammations. The leaves were taken orally for gastrointestinal complaints and sore throats. In the 17th century, evening primrose oil became a popular folk remedy in Europe, where it was known as “King’s cure-all. Today, evening primrose oil dietary supplements are promoted for atopic dermatitis (a type of eczema), rheumatoid arthritis, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), breast pain, menopause symptoms, and other conditions. Evening primrose oil may also be included in products that are applied to the skin.

All parts are edible, but different parts of the plant are tastier in particular years of the plant’s life and development. The flower stalk that appears in the plant’s second year is also edible and is best to harvest in the early spring or summer. Cut the stalks and peel the outside for slightly spicy, crunchy vegetables; flowers and buds from two-year-old plants can be surprisingly sweet and tasty.

Despite that comfrey might have mild toxic effects, its medicinal benefits are still undeniably compelling. Comfrey is a very useful plant to have around, whether as a supplementary food source or as a first aid herbal remedy. Most commonly used as tea, it can also be prepared in salads or cooked. It can be a great additive to a skin salve or as a plant fertilizer.The small quantities of alkaloids found in comfrey can have a cumulative effect on liver health if too much is consumed regularly. People with liver problems should not ingest comfrey. The edible leaves are used to thicken soups and stews, similar to sassafras leaves. The bright fuchsia flowers lend a pop of color to any dish. Osage orange fruit, which has a delightful citric fragrance, is inedible to humans, but squirrels seem to love it.&nbsp;Fact or fiction their pleasant aroma is appreciated as both a home scent and autumn table decor.&nbsp;And while their purported use as a bug deterrent is contested, the&nbsp;fruit and wood of the Osage orange tree does contain tetrahydroxystilbene, an anti-fungicide which deters insects.Note that the milky white sap can be a skin irritant, and cause staining or spotting.&nbsp;It has been used as a source of both glue and lacquer, which should give you a clear idea.&nbsp;

Wine Cap Mushrooms

Laetiporus is a genus of edible mushrooms.  I find both Laetiporus sulphureus and Laetiporus cincinnatus, which has a more whitish appearance and underside pore surface, rather than yellow, and which have a slightly different growth pattern.   It's common name is due to it having a texture similar to that of chicken meat.  It is considered a choice edible.  Great meat substitute and freezes well.
