mugwort is known as ‘the oldest of all herbs’ (yldost wyrta) and has deep importance cross-culturally in the history of medicine.
it is one of the nine sacred herbs of norse paganism.
it is deeply associated with the moon as the leaves are silvery on the bottom and shine in the moon light.
it is a sacred herb of artemis, a mood goddess, protector of women, children and nature. st john wore it as a belt in the wilds.

it is a bitter, warming tonic that is both relaxing and stimulating.
it improves digestion, promotes dreaming and warms, clears + tones the female reproductive system.
it has been used for certain imbalances of the brain and nervous system like dyslexia, convulsions (particularly in children) and speech disorders.

in my own practice apart from more obvious indications, i also like to use it for people on the spectrum, for addiction or eating disorder recovery and to help women reconnect with broken femininity. it is an excellent herb to help men connect with their feminine side
or heal any female related traumas or grudges.

it is very actively used in TCM as moxa. it is also actively used as a flavoring agent in asia.

*harvesting and using mugwort safely*
it should be harvested for internal use before going to seed. it is nice to harvest on a full or new moon.
it can be taken as a tea or tincture. if you’re going to tincture it, tincturing it fresh is ideal.
if you dry it you can smoke it, burn it as an incense or infuse it into an oil for external use.
i do have it prepared in all of these forms, although not all are presently listed.

*female indications*
at a glance its most common indication is as a female support + emmenagogue that warms and decongests the female reproductive system.
it wonderful support for painful and imbalanced menstrual cycles. it can bring on a delayed menses as it is warming and stimulating.
historically it has also been used to cleanse and clear the reproductive system after the mother has given birth.
i have used it with success in longstanding infertility cases
and it is an ingredient in my cycle + fertility support tea ‘boundaries’
(marshmallow root, black raspberry leaf, mugwort, nettle + seed and rose hips)

matthew wood says it’s a great choice for women who have experienced abuse, poverty or hardship of any kind. it’s said to be useful for those who feel that they have ‘lost a part of themselves’ on their journey and look for comfort in substance or palliative pleasures to fill the void. mugwort’s latin name ‘artmisia vulgaris’ denotes that it is a sacred herb of the goddess artemis, a sacred protector of women, children and nature.

i have a female support remedy that is equally physical and emotionally/spiritually explorative (agrimony, mugwort + black raspberry leaf) to help reconnect with yourself and to release deep tension and ideals that no longer suit you. it is suited to support those who endeavor to ‘take off their mask’ and do some deep healing. black walnut hull or cranesbill geranium is a nice companion remedy if there is a dark, toxic relationship involved, or if we’re recovering from trauma or codependency. ghost pipe is an honorable mention for any serious, active processing and shadow work.

*dream work, spiritual and religious use*
in the bible st john is said to wear a belt of mugwort in his solo hermitage through the wilds. mugwort is one of the original incenses for clearing and protecting a space from untoward energies and entities. on a practical and common note, it has been used to clear fleas from homes and keep moths from nibbling closet goods. it is a bitter remedy and warms the digestive influences so it has been used in convalescence and for clearing worms from children.

on a more ethereal note, it has been used for seizures in children, once thought to be spirit possessions. it has also been used to ward off disease and evil influences (it was used by plague doctors in the form of incense) it was also used for exorcisms. and it is also a potent dream herb, bringing a pleasant relaxation and ease before bed and inducing colorful and healing dreams. i think it gives you a little bit of a body buzz as a tea. it’s in my ‘rose colored glasses’ tea blend, which definitely lends a gentle body buzz. it’s been a best seller since my shop opened. (gunpowder green tea, silver needles white tea, mugwort, marshmallow leaf + damiana with roses and rose hips.)

*notes on dorothy hall’s indications for mugwort*
‘it is suited to highly intelligent people with complex thoughts that are difficult to describe, speech disorders and dyslexia, highly elevated senses, sensitivity to light and sound, with great difficulty getting deep sleep. it is suited to people in whom the intuitive, psychic, psychological, creative and artistic side of the mind is highly developed, but who have trouble with expression or wit the world around them.’ (...) ‘(mugwort) is beneficial for connecting the left and right sides of the brain and for complex psychological problems’
(an excerpt from matthew wood’s earthwise herbal volume 1, page 119)

mugwort has had a reputation for centuries as a remedy for people with hysteria and psychological disorders. i think the complex actions of mugwort support the brain and nervous system while clearly being tied into digestive and metabolic pathways in the body, things that can go awry from any kind of extended shivering- even from a bad fever or case of the flu.

i think this herb helps to reconnect fundamental pathways within the body that can become imbalanced from any number of reasons. it has indications where it has been used for trauma recovery and it is clearly a complex detox herb. for these reasons i find it a reasonable choice for those working through mental health issues and recovering from traumas or unhealthy patterns in an authentic way. i also think it’s a meaningful consideration for anyone on the spectrum, as they are commonly very sensitive, highly intelligent and struggle with verbal expression.

i consult for free for your safety and benefit. i would be so glad to help. you’re welcome to send me an outline of your situation any time and i usually respond somewhat promptly. blessings!
