All of our Shagbark is sustainably harvested from private land. Only pieces of the bark that have already become detached from the trunk of the tree are harvested to ensure that each tree remains unharmed. Also, the bark is collected from many different trees or recently downed trees to further ensure that each standing tree continues to thrive.

This Hoosierland favorite has several uses! It can used to make a delightful hot tea packed with magnesium (see benefits and instructions below), or use it to make a deliciously earthy hickory syrup. Shagbark hickory is an amazing additive for smoking meats as it imparts a deep smoky flavor to any protein. Others use Shagbark in crafts and other decor to show off nature's rustic beauty.

Tea Benefits:
Hickory Bark Tea contains polyphenol antioxidants that have anti-inflammatory effect. This can help with conditions like arthritis, joint pain, gastrointestinal issues, skin rashes, and sore throats
Traditionally used to treat digestive complaints, hickory bark tea can sooth irritation in the GI tract. It also provides dietary fiber for improved regularity.
In addition to antioxidants, the tea contains nutrients like vitamin C (add pine needles and/or bark to your tea for even more vitamin C), calcium, magnesium, potassium, and zinc.

Tea Instructions:
Peel and shave the inner bark (1-2 tablespoons) after gently cleaning with a stiff-bristled brush. Add some pine needles and/or pine bark if desired. Simmer in 2 cups water for 15-20 minutes. Add honey to sweeten to taste. Strain before drinking.
Avoid drinking near bedtime as it may have a stimulating effect. Pregnant women should consult a doctor before consuming.
